For the ultimate all round fitness workout, Sid Smith, former junior ABA and Professional Southern Area welterweight champion offers both boxercise classes and also 1-2-1 boxing training lessons to both men and women. Boxing training is regarded as being one of the finest ways of getting the body into shape as well as being the perfect stress-buster. The body and mind are interconnected, with emotions playing a big part in determining one’s health status. The body needs to be strong and robust which in turn will allow the right state of mind to be achieved, thus enabling one to deal with the rigours of stress in a more effective and productive way.

In 1971 at the age of twelve, Sid attended the famous South London boxing club Fitzroy Lodge ABC, an essential and vital element in the world of boxing. Established in 1908 the club was originally based in Walcott Square and boasted three rings, however, 1939 saw the demise of the Lodge when it was bombed and reduced to rubble during the Blitz. Since 1946 it has been located under the railway arches in Hercules Road, Lambeth. It was very much a spit and sawdust kind of gym in the early days, a little rough around the edges and with very basic facilities such as freezing cold showers but even so, the club still managed to impart a great atmosphere. Sid thoroughly enjoyed the thrice weekly training sessions and found them to be a great way of channelling his energies. By being committed and hard working he began to learn about discipline and about respect for his fellow fighters and opponents.

Sid’s first mentors were two well-known junior boxing trainers in the 70′s, namely Ronnie Summers and Jimmy Levy who were a source of inspiration to all the lads that showed dedication and talent. After six months of hard training and perseverance Sid was in good shape and ready for his first bout. The venue was the old Bermondsey and Oxford ABC where Sid fought S Tennant over three one and a half minute rounds, winning the fight on a points decision. Sid was hooked from then on and knew that it was the sport for him. After a string of bouts at various amateur boxing clubs across London Sid went on to win the London Schools title two years running after which he also won the National ABA finals title two years in a row, along with two NABC titles for which he was awarded two Joe Bugner scholarships entitling him to travel abroad to boxing training camps both in Denmark and Holland.

At the age of seventeen and still at Fitzroy Lodge, Sid was being trained as a senior by the legendary amateur boxing trainers Mick Carney and Billy Webster, and it wasn’t long before he was picked by British boxing coach Kevin Hickey to box for the England squad where he got to box both in Germany and Jersey as well as all across the United Kingdom. After competing in over one hundred bouts as an amateur Sid proceeded to carve out a professional career for himself in the world of boxing. Over the next three or four years Sid embraced his strict training regime with such dedication and perseverance that he went on to win twenty out of a total of twenty five professional bouts.

Today Sid is using his knowledge and expertise to help those who wish to benefit from all-round fitness and total body conditioning programmes by way of 1-2-1 boxing training lessons. Whether it be to tone up, keep in shape, de-stress or to lose weight, all sessions can be tailored to meet individual requirements.
